Geometiles, San Diego-based Math Educational Tool to Inspire Kids Nationally as Part of the 2019 National Math Festival

SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Geometiles, a San Diego-based math educational tool created by Yana Mohanty, Ph.D., is partnering with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath, the nation's only museum of mathematics) to bring Geometiles to the 2019 National Math Festival, May 4, Washington, D.C.

The biannual National Math Festival is the country's largest celebration of mathematics with a day of free hands-on activities, fascinating speakers, and inspiring performances, showcasing how math is everywhere and full of surprises.

Geometiles will host an activity area with MoMath so that many of the 20,000 event participants of all ages will be able to enjoy the San Diego-based interlocking tiles during free play and structured activities.

Launched three years ago, Geometiles have already won four national awards and found their way into numerous schools, math festivals, colleges, universities, and homes across the country. The 2019 National Math Festival is another major math event showcasing Geometiles' movement to spark kids' math curiosity.

"Too many kids grow up having no math literacy, which limits both their life choices and their competence to handle everyday financial affairs," said Mohanty, who earned her B.S in Electrical Engineering from UCLA, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her Ph.D. in Mathematics at UC San Diego.

Mohanty's approach to repair math's bad reputation is to show how enjoyable learning math can be. "The idea behind Geometiles is to give kids a tool that makes them so caught up in the discovery process while playing, that they won't even realize they are doing 'work' learning math," said Mohanty who taught students at UC San Diego and Palomar College, and coaches teachers as a co-founder of the San Diego Math Teachers' Circle.

Wholly made in the United States using safe, durable materials without phthalates, lead or toxic paint, Geometiles comes with a free online resource library. Learn more at www.geometiles.com.

Hosted in Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, DC, May 4, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., the 2019 National Math Festival is organized by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath), the nation's only museum of math located in Manhattan.
