What Casino Management Needs to Know to Keep Customers and Employees Safe
Experts detail handling an active shooter incident at casino security training presentation

BROOKFIELD, Wis., March 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- David Vialpando, director of gaming programs for OnCourse Learning Financial Services, is one of four experts scheduled to discuss what casino management needs  to know about tribal casino employee training for active shooter incidents April 18 during the National Indian Gaming Association's Indian Gaming Tradeshow and Convention in Las Vegas.

"We live in a time where active shooter events are becoming more and more common in the United States," Vialpando said. "Because of this, it is important for casino management to know what an active shooter is, what to do and what not to do."

Presentation agenda

The 2 p.m. presentation will include the following:

  • Handling active shooters in the casino, casino offices and gaming commission offices
  • Encouraging the mental preparation necessary for survival
  • Providing a history of active shooters in the U.S. and how times have changed since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting
  • Enactment of a real-life active shooter scenario.

Action plan

"Having an action plan in place and having a good partnership with law enforcement are critical for the best possible outcome in any active shooter incident," said Vialpando, whose extensive law enforcement background includes working as a special agent with the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Gambling Control.

"We hope that those attending this presentation will share the material with their co-workers, family members and friends to help everyone develop their own personal critical incident response plan for surviving these traumatic, yet all-too-frequent events," Vialpando said.

Other gaming expert presenters

Other California-based casino training experts presenting with Vialpando, who currently is the commission chairman of the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel Tribal Gaming Commission, are Andrew Hofstetter, Tribal Gaming Protection Network chairman for Tribal Government Affairs; Eddie Ilko, security claims manager at Sycuan Casino; and Les Stanley, executive director of the Rincon Gaming Commission.
