The Benefits of Calendula Officianalis for Protection Against the Harmful Side Effects of Radiation
My Girls™ Skin Care Samples distributed at #ASTRO17

BOSTON, Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on the Oncology Nursing Society's evidence-based study; Putting Evidence Into Practice: Evidence-based Interventions in Radiation Dermatitis there is increased demand from radiation oncologists and nurses seeking help for skin side effects that can delay radiation therapy treatments.  Unfortunately, no gold standard exists for the prevention of radiodermatitis as evidence is lacking on how to manage this significant side effect. Oncology nurses are critical to providing information on general skin care for patients undergoing radiation and seek evidence-based interventions to guide their clinical practice. In their role as educators, they provide guidance to patients on when to expect skin reactions to occur and signs and symptoms of infection.

Studies Show that Calendula Stops Inflammation

"Calendula is a well studied natural remedy and has been used for centuries to treat skin and recently clinical data has been generated to show its efficacy in radiation dermatitis. A summary of clinical and non-clinical studies on calendula, studied in laboratories around the world, is helpful for supporting patients during treatment," noted Kevin Leach, Ph.D, DABT.

Dr. Leach's summary on The Benefits of Calendula for Protection Against the Harmful Side Effects of Radiation Therapy will be available in the My Girls™  Skin Care booth #2727 at the annual American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology held at the San Diego Convention Center, Sept. 24-27th.  My Girls™ samples will be available to participants as many clinicians recommend the cream to patients because it is one of the few calendula creams made without parabens, fragrance or dyes. And patients may continue using it after treatments end for other indications, such as reducing redness and for help with healing surgical wounds.

Patients undergoing radiation therapy should always consult their healthcare provider before trying a new topical agent to treat radiated skin or adding other interventions into their routine.

About My Girls Skin Care – My Girls Skin Care is a paraben-free, dye-free, fragrance-free calendula cream developed by a breast cancer survivor who discovered it in Hungary and used it to calm and soothe skin side effects of radiation therapy while undergoing treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital.
