PLEASE TOUCH THE ART: The QUALIA Collection
A new exhibition of art and function by Azadeh Shladovsky

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- PLEASE TOUCH THE ART: The QUALIA Collection is a new exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based artist and designer Azadeh Shladovsky showing at the London Design Fair located at the Old Truman Brewery, Hanbury Street, London, September 21st – 24th, 2017.

Shladovsky is best known for her powerful and iconic expressions in steel, wood and sheepskin, and continues to push the boundaries of form and material juxtapositions. After focusing on her conceptual art practice for the last 3 years, Shladovsky returns to the world of functional art with a highly-anticipated collection named:

QUALIA. [kwah-lee-u]
Def. The subjective component of sense perceptions, arising from stimulation of the senses by phenomena.

The synchronicity of life events, recent neurological research and years of material manipulation constitute the framework for QUALIA, a collection of functional objects that explore the importance of touch in visual processing. The conception of these objects is rooted in the braille alphabet, the palpable raised dots that allow blind individuals the ability to read by touch.

Each piece not only represents a braille letter but also explores the metaphorical symbols of these letters in a world where the boundaries between perception and reality have become less recognizable. New material juxtapositions are revealed with the use of wood, velvet, mirror, brass and marble. The resulting haptic expressions are engaging and functional while continuing to question our perception of material, objects and space. Ultimately, the work is intended to evoke touch, intensifying and grounding our visual experience of the objects into purposeful, tangible multisensory acts.

AZADEH SHLADOVSKY:  Taking an unrestrained approach to artistic self-expression, Azadeh Shladovsky has established, since 2003, a studio practice that reflects a seamless confluence of art, design and interior architecture.

The breadth and diversity of her work arises in large part from her sensorimotor approach to vision. With her unyielding commitment to the integrity of process, Azadeh continues to broaden her artistic reach to discover new ways of communicating. The central premise of Azadeh's work is the exploration of sensory awareness and visual consciousness. Her work manifests perceptual dichotomies in material and spatial expressions that evoke the power of the visceral, challenging the way we choose to see and interpret the world around us.

Azadeh's work has captured an international audience and the attention of publications including but not limited to: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal,  The Los Angeles Times, Interior Design, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, Robb Report and Women's Wear Daily.
