RARITAN, N.J., Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (Ortho), a global leader of in vitro diagnostics, today announced it will present two scientific posters on its automated immunohematology instruments and showcase three next-generation automation products at its booth (No. 1001) at the 2016 AABB Annual Meeting. Ortho will also host a customer event that will feature presentations by local hospital blood bank, laboratory and transfusion services managers, including two from Orlando Regional Medical Center, who will discuss the hospital's mass transfusion protocol in the aftermath of the nightclub attack in June 2016. The conference will be held October 22-25 in Orlando's Orange County Convention Center.

The company will also host an invitation-only customer event on Sunday, October 23, at 6:30 p.m., featuring sessions on mass transfusion protocol and testing in transfusion services. The featured speakers will include:

• Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP) Theory and Practice: Lourdes Miller, blood bank supervisor at Orlando Regional Medical Center, and Carol Fortier, laboratory manager at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, will discuss the Orlando Health Hospitals' response to the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in June. Orlando Regional Medical Center is the main hospital of Orlando Health, Inc., a not-for-profit healthcare network serving Central Florida. Representatives will discuss how they planned for, practiced and ultimately executed their massive transfusion protocol in the wake of the tragic event.
• Health System Standardization Decisions in the Blood Bank: Diana Ramirez-Gomez, manager of transfusion services, and Morgan Lenhart, assistant manager of transfusion services, both of Florida Hospital, will discuss how the facility's laboratory has handled challenges in methodology. Hospital managers faced a system-wide decision to standardize processes, while reducing costs.

Another highlight of Ortho's presence at the AABB Annual Meeting will be an industry workshop in partnership with Quotient on Monday, October 24 at 7:00 a.m., entitled, "Challenges and Opportunities to Better Match Donor Units with Patients to Reduce Alloimmunization Risks and Efficiently Improve Patient Care".  Speakers at this workshop will address the increasing role of personalized medicine in immunohematology as it relates to better matching of donor units to patients. Dr. Gregory Denomme, senior director of immunohematology and innovation for Versiti blood centers, Dr. Aaron Tobian, associate professor of pathology, medicine and epidemiology of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Dr. Silvano Wendel, medical director of Hospital Sirio Libanes Blood Bank in São Paulo, Brazil, will share examples of how they have implemented personalized medicine in patient-matching and advances in donor identification with the goal of mitigating alloimmunization. Topics will include limitations of current practices; potential changes in practice with an eye toward future standards of care; and the health economic impact.
