Pursuing Precision with Passion' will be theme of Endometriosis Foundation of America Conference in April in New York City

NEW YORK, April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- On April 17th, 18th and 19th, leading experts in endometriosis care and research will assemble for the Endometriosis Foundation of America's (EFA), 7th Annual Medical Conference: "Endometriosis Surgery 2016: Pursuing Precision with Passion." Endometriosis affects 176 million women worldwide, with an annual societal cost in excess of $110 billion in the US alone.

The Endometriosis Foundation of America strives to increase disease recognition, provide advocacy, facilitate expert surgical training, and fund landmark endometriosis research. Engaged in a robust campaign to inform both the medical community and the public, the EFA places particular emphasis on the critical importance of early diagnosis and effective intervention while simultaneously providing education to the next generation of medical professionals and their patients.

"By gathering the top physicians, researchers, and integrative service professionals, we are all able to learn from each other and improve patient experiences. In addition to discussing cutting edge research, we will explore clinical procedures including diagnostic techniques and surgical removal of the disease, which can help a woman live a normal and productive life free of pain and chronic disease. Everything from basic science to clinical management to the latest research will be discussed by top practitioners, scientists, and disease advocates from around the world," said Dr. Tamer Seckin, who founded the EFA with his patient, Padma Lakshmi.

Participants of the conference will gain valuable knowledge of the best global practices for the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, and will learn about emerging technologies, science and research.  Established and outdated mindsets regarding the disease will be challenged.

The year's three-day event will kick-off with an open to the public patient Awareness Day. This full day program will allow patients, loved ones, educators, and healthcare professionals to discuss disease challenges in an open forum format. Highlights will include patient and physician led panels covering topics ranging from early diagnosis and intervention to sex and fertility to pain management. The second annual ENPOWR Award will be dedicated to The Brooklyn Latin School for their prioritization of their student's health through participation in the EFA's adolescent education program, The ENPOWR Project.

The following two days, April 18th and 19th will showcase the work of clinicians and researchers from across the globe. Notable talks include a lecture from Pinar Kodaman, MD, PhD regarding intervention timing, as well as a discussion on stem cells and endometriosis led by Hugh Taylor, MD. Farr Nezhat, MD, the 2016 Harry Reich Award recipient, will deliver the keynote address. He is being honored for his lifelong commitment to advancing women's health, and work in both treating and investigating the relationship between endometriosis and cancer. The award will be given at the eighth annual Blossom Ball on April 19th at Pier Sixty.

Endometriosis a disease in which tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (called the endometrium) is found outside the uterus, where it induces a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in scar tissue. The symptoms of endometriosis include painful periods, painful ovulation, pain during or after sexual intercourse, abnormal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, fatigue, and infertility, and can impact general physical, mental, and social well being. A general lack of awareness combined with a "normalization" of symptoms results in a significant delay from when a woman first experiences symptoms until she eventually is diagnosed and treated.

The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA) was founded by Tamer Seckin, MD and Padma Lakshmi and strives to increase disease recognition, provide advocacy, facilitate expert surgical training, and fund landmark endometriosis research. Engaged in a robust campaign to inform both the medical community and the public, the EFA places particular emphasis on the critical importance of early diagnosis and effective intervention, while simultaneously providing education to the next generation of medical professionals and their patients.
