BOSTON, Nov. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt announced today that it will introduce the latest editions of its celebrated foundational programs Collections and Journeys at the National Council for Teachers of English annual conference in Minneapolis, November 19-22 (Booth #635).  Demonstrating the depth and breadth of its offerings, HMH will also showcase the integration of its powerful new stable of English language development resources and literacy intervention solutions, including the recently acquired and award-winning READ 180.

Journeys ©2017 (K-6) and Collections©2017 (6-12) together offer a complete K-12 language arts solution that supports students throughout their academic careers.  HMH's core reading and ELA programs feature shared digital resources and experiences, from personalized student and teacher dashboards to interactive note-taking and writing tools. As students progress, they engage with increasingly complex texts and sharpen close reading and analysis skills, while a rigorous instructional path helps them draw deep connections across genres.

Aligning closely with Journeys and Collections, HMH's newest English language development program Escalate English provides supplemental material for students in grades 4-8 who have reached a plateau in their academic English acquisition. The program offers age-appropriate and relevant fiction, informational text and other multimedia resources that engage students in active language use across a variety of contexts, from conversations to academic writing.

"Our aim is to empower and engage learners so they can realize their potential," said Mary Cullinane, EVP, Corporate Affairs and Chief Content Officer. "Strong literacy skills are vital to this goal. We're proud to offer rigorous reading and language arts solutions that provide both students and educators with a complete toolkit for literacy success."

For reading intervention, HMH offers a range of solutions designed to tackle the complicated literacy challenges students may face. The market-leading READ 180 leverages adaptive learning technology and teacher facilitated instruction to help struggling readers close their achievement gaps.  In addition, System 44 enables intensive intervention for students who have not yet mastered foundational reading skills while Inside the Text offers strong supplemental intervention to complement core instruction.

A new report commissioned by the Institute for Education Sciences found statistically significant gains in students using READ 180, as defined by the What Works Clearing House (WWC) evidence standards.  These gains were unique to READ 180; out of the 10 intervention programs evaluated, only READ 180 was found to have statistically significant positive effects on reading achievement. Furthermore, the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE) has recently re-endorsed both READ 180 and System 44 as effective intervention solutions that raise reading achievement for students in special education.

Also at NCTE 2015, Alison Bechdel, award-winning HMH author of Fun Home, will give the conference's keynote address, and HMH's Trade publishing division, steeped in nearly two centuries of literary legacy, will exhibit in Booth #634. Heinemann, HMH's professional development content arm, will host over 100 author sessions and events featuring education leaders, including Carol Jago and Lucy Calkins, in Booth # 832.
