(ISC)² To Honor Cybersecurity Industry Icons at Ninth Annual Information Security Leadership Awards Ceremony
Honorees recognized by (ISC)² Board of Directors for lifelong service to cybersecurity profession
CLEARWATER, Fla., Oct. 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- (ISC)² – the world's largest nonprofit association of certified cybersecurity professionals – today announced the honorees of the 2019 (ISC)² Board Awards, a program that recognizes outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of cybersecurity over the course of a career. Award recipients are hand-selected by the (ISC)² Board of Directors.
The (ISC)² Board Awards honorees will be celebrated during an awards ceremony at the (ISC)² 2019 Security Congress in Orlando, Florida, on Oct. 30, alongside the winners of the 2019 Information Security Leadership Awards Americas.

"These individuals have gone above and beyond over the course of a career by not just excelling in their own work, but by blazing trails for others, inventing processes and procedures, leading people to success and helping our association and the profession as a whole grow and thrive. They've made a lasting impact for future generations, and we want to acknowledge and celebrate them accordingly."
The (ISC)² Board Awards for 2019:
- The Fellow of (ISC)² Award was established to honor and distinguish a select number of elite information security professionals who have made outstanding contributions throughout their careers to the information security profession. This year's two recipients are:
- Ezequiel M. Sallis, CISSP, who has served as a digital investigator in the Cyber Crimes Unit of the City of Buenos Aires Police Department. His expertise has enabled authorities to better combat cybercrimes related to child pornography, fraud, drug trafficking, human trafficking and terrorism. He also has trained judges, prosecutors and judicial operators in cybercrime to develop procedures and documentation related to the importance of digital evidence.
- The late Michael Assante, whose family will accept the award at the ceremony on his behalf. Assante served in the United States Navy and later became a cybersecurity innovator. He was most recently the director of Industrials and Infrastructure at the SANS Institute. He was awarded the Meritorious Public Service Award for his contributions as a civilian in support of the U.S. Navy and was honored posthumously in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate for his dedication, passion and contributions to our nation's security.
- The (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to John Sherwood by the (ISC)² Board of Directors as the highest tribute bestowed in the information security industry. Named after Harold F. Tipton, CISSP, known as the "George Washington of information security," the award honors his memory and the tradition of passionately promoting and enhancing the information security profession by serving over the long term with excellence and distinction. Sherwood has spent the last 29 years focused on the security and risk management of business information systems. The great majority of this experience is in the banking and financial services industry, but also covers aerospace, media, oil and gas, retail, government, military and telecommunications. Sherwood has published and lectured extensively around the world on a broad range of topics in the information security and risk management domains.
- The James R. Wade Service Award is awarded by the (ISC)² Board of Directors to acknowledge the involvement of those volunteers who merit special distinction for their sustained and valuable service to (ISC)². This year's honoree is Felipe A. Castro, CISSP. Castro is a cybersecurity veteran of 25 years who has worked in the telecom, consulting and banking industries in Europe and his native Chile. He is currently a freelance consultant and university cybersecurity teacher. An (ISC)² member since 2002, Felipe volunteers with the (ISC)² Chile Chapter and over the past two years, he has helped both the local and the regional teams organize and prepare public events and conferences.
- Finally, (ISC)² created the new (ISC)² Diversity Award to honor an individual that represents the core values of (ISC)² through significant contributions in driving a more diverse workforce in the cybersecurity community. The inaugural recipient of this award is Mari Galloway, CISSP, CEO and founding board member of the Women's Society of Cyberjutsu, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance women in cybersecurity careers. The organization promotes hands-on training, networking, resource-sharing and other professional opportunities. It organizes hacker camps, STEM camps, workshops, study groups and speaker programs for girls and women beginning in middle school and extending through their professional careers.
