FairWarning to Discuss Best Practices for Securing PHI at HIPAA Summit
General Manager of Healthcare at FairWarning Invited to Participate in Panel to Help Covered Entities Navigate Regulatory Requirements with New Business Associates

CLEARWATER, Fla., Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2019 Healthcare Data Breach Report from HIPAA Journal found that eight health plans reported breaches in January, and five breaches were reported by business associates of HIPAA-covered entities, including the largest data breach of the month. This reality makes it more important than ever for healthcare organizations to hold their business associates to a high expectation of privacy, security and compliance – but how can they do that?

Today's healthcare regulatory environment has grown increasingly complex as providers fight both external cybercriminals and internal threats from employees who misuse access to patient data. Because the bulk of healthcare data breaches involve insiders, providers need tools to monitor user activity to detect and prevent mishandling of data and improve compliance.

The HIPAA Summit gathers regulatory experts from across the country to help organizations improve their HIPAA compliance. Sessions are designed to keep attendees up to date on new cybersecurity threats and HIPAA enforcement initiatives, as well as offer best practices from those in the trenches: privacy and security officers.

Shane Whitlatch, general manager, healthcare at FairWarning, said: "Security and compliance are table stakes to us, and while many people say, 'It's not if, but when you're breached,' we cannot afford to think like that. We have to take every precaution to ensure customers aren't breached because our customers' reputations and the safety of their patients rely on our security. When covered entities engage with new business associates, they need to be sure their PHI is protected, and this panel will help them understand how to work safely with BAs."
