Louisville Welcomes NIH's Landmark Precision Medicine Research Effort

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- This week (Thursday, February 28, until Sunday, March 3, 2019), the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Journey, a traveling, hands-on exhibit that raises awareness about the All of Us Research Program, will be visiting Louisville. The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. By taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology, researchers will uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine.

"All of us are unique, but today we live mostly in an era of 'one-size-fits-all' medicine," said Eric Dishman, director of the All of Us Research Program. "I'm alive today because of precision medicine and I think everyone deserves that same opportunity no matter the color of your skin, your economic status, your age or your sex or gender. In other words, it will truly take all of us."

The NIH's All of Us Journey is being hosted in Louisville by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (the Alliance), Americana World Community Center, Kornhauser Health Sciences Library at the University of Louisville, and the National Baptist Convention USA.

All of Us seeks to transform the relationship between researchers and participants, bringing them together as partners to inform the program's directions, goals and responsible return of research information. These efforts include building trust among populations historically underrepresented in research. Participants will be able to access their own health information, summary data about the entire participant community and information about studies and findings that come from All of Us.

"We are bringing the All of Us Research Program directly to people all across the country as part of our ongoing work to increase the inclusion of all communities in clinical and biomedical research. We are proud to be one of the hosts of the All of Us Journey in Louisville to help build the foundation for a new era of health care where medicine is tailored to each person," said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health.
