Control technology from Linde (booth #320) is advancing powder metallurgy (PM) and every sequence of the fabrication chain, including additive manufacturing. The presentations will be of particular interest to manufacturers involved in PM sintering and metal-injection-molding (MIM) sintering processes. They are scheduled for the Furnace Atmosphere & Control technical session June 15th at 8 a.m.:

  • "Carbon Control: PM Industry Challenges and Practical Solutions in the Sintering Process." Akin Malas, Head of Applications Technology, Metals, Linde LLC, will discuss how total process control of hydrocarbons can improve the quality and consistency of parts, and is now a benchmark for automotive and aerospace applications.
  • "Protection of Sintering Furnace Equipment Against Corrosion and Carburization." Grzegorz Moroz, Program Manager, Metals, Linde LLC, will detail the full impact of high-temperature corrosion and carburization on parts and equipment – and how they can be avoided to dramatically reduce downtime and maximize manufacturing productivity.

Linde offers total atmosphere control in sintering of PM and MIM parts with the SINTERFLEX® Atmosphere Control System (ACS). The SINTERFLEX ACS technology optimizes the control of oxygen and carbon content in the sintering atmosphere. By establishing a carbon-neutral atmosphere during sintering, the system eliminates decarburization, creating more uniform carbon content of sintered parts. The system also improves and optimizes the total carbon input to the sintering furnace, eliminating excessive carbon deposition which may affect the life of expensive furnace components.

Powder metal sintering requires a specific gas atmosphere in order to assist de-lubrication of green components and to avoid decarburization during the sintering process. Sintering is a high-temperature process that forms engineered components by fusing alloyed powders together by applying heat below their melting point.

PowderMet is the International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials.
