Popular Math Experts Introduce the Guided Math Framework in Upcoming Seminar

PITTSBURGH and RICHMOND, Va. and PETERBOROUGH, N.H., March 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Classroom teachers struggle with math blocks and fitting in everything students need to know about math. In an upcoming seminar, teacher favorites Kristin Hilty and Anni Stipek offer resources and strategies to help teachers of grades 1–5 manage their time with students all while hitting content requirements. Guided Math: An Instructional Framework to Build Conceptual Understanding in All Students will be held in Pittsburgh, PA on April 27-28 (featuring Hilty) and in Richmond, VA on May 1-2 (featuring Stipek).

"Teachers are frustrated because they want to use a daily calendar, math warm-ups, guided math lessons, and centers. But there are simply not enough hours in the day," Hilty says. "In this seminar, I'll introduce my guided math framework and show teachers how they can maximize their math block to reach students at every level and across content areas."

Using a classroom-tested model, attendees will get a close-up look at what quality math instruction looks like. They'll discover how to enrich learning with morning warm-ups, whole-class instruction, flexible grouping, individual conferencing, and ongoing assessment. In addition, they'll examine how to create lessons that integrate mathematical concepts with real-world experiences.

"No matter what math curriculum teachers use, they can easily turn their classrooms into a numeracy-rich environment where students learn and become better mathematicians," Hilty says. One by one, she and Stipek will reveal the secrets behind classroom arrangements and configurations, and how to establish procedures and routines to make the most of the time teachers do have.

Throughout the two days, teachers also will explore the use of language in the math classroom and how it is essential to meeting the high expectations of today's standards. The presenters will not only introduce strategies and activities that can easily be woven into instruction, but will also guide attendees through the process of building an activity-filled math journal. "My hope is that every teacher who attends takes the journal they create back to their classroom to use as a model for their students," adds Hilty.

Teachers know how overwhelming it can be when students walk into the classroom with different levels of mathematical understanding. In this seminar, attendees will discover how using the guided math framework allows them the freedom to help their strugglers as well as provide their advanced learners with the depth and rigor they need.

"I invite every teacher to join me in Guided Math: An Instructional Framework to Build Conceptual Understanding in All Students," Hilty says. "It's an effective and fun way for teachers to gain flexible strategies to maximize their math block and achieve what may seem like an unachievable goal—reaching students at every level."
