National Media Literacy Week Events in Los Angeles, November 2-6

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The launch of Media Literacy Week (#MediaLitWk) in the United States is being held November 2-6, 2015. The mission of Media Literacy Week is to highlight the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today. Inspired by Canada's Media Literacy Week, now in its 10th year, the US inaugural event is hosted by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) and includes more than 60 partnering organizations and media literacy experts from around the country.

President and CEO, Center for Media Literacy (CML), Tessa Jolls explained, "Media Literacy Week is being observed throughout Los Angeles, the media/entertainment capital of the world, with teachers from all over Los Angeles and from as far away as Korea participating in workshops, professional development and student production activities. Social action and social media are addressed in media literacy education designed to prepare youth and adults for life in a global media culture."

Among Los Angeles participants are: CML, California State University Northridge Journalism Department, UCLA School of Education, AnimAction, Inc., USC Marshall School of Business and Annenberg School of Communications, Variety, Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Museum of Tolerance (MOT), Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, and the Japanese American Museum.

CML has convened a panel of thought leaders to address the state of media literacy in Los Angeles for Wednesday afternoon, moderated by Variety journalist Brian Lowry, with Liebe Geft, Director, MOT; Mark Slavkin, Director of Education, Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts; and Jolls. The discussion will be video recorded and take place at the Museum of Tolerance; the video release will be available on the CML and MOT websites. On Friday, November 6th, CML and MOT will provide a translated tour with a discussion of representation and media literacy concepts for a visiting delegation of educators sponsored by the Korea Press Foundation.
