NEWARK, Calif., Oct. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Hospi Corporation, a patient-centric medical device company, today introduced the Macy Catheter™ Tray, designed to enable rapid administration of medications or fluids to patients when intravenous (IV) or oral administration is difficult. The Macy Catheter is designed to provide a bridge or alternative to IV access, to decrease hospital admissions and to facilitate discharge of patients. Hospi is introducing the Macy Catheter Tray at the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in Boston.
"We're excited about the introduction of our newest product, the Macy Catheter Tray, which supports the needs of clinicians working in emergency departments and other acute care facilities," said Igal Ladabaum, CEO of Hospi Corporation. "This convenience kit reflects our commitment to optimize patient care through expanded use of the Macy Catheter in areas where it can help to ease provider workflow, lower the risk of iatrogenic complications and reduce costs."
The Macy Catheter—which has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance (2014) and CE Mark approval (2015)— is the only device designed solely for ongoing rectal delivery of medications and fluids. It offers clinicians and patients an easy, comfortable and cost-effective alternative to IV or oral administration. The Macy Catheter Tray packages the Macy Catheter with accessories that enable its insertion and use in the emergency and acute care settings.
The Macy Catheter is currently used in the hospice/palliative care settings in the United States, and is now being adopted in the emergency/acute care arena. Recently published case reports (American Journal of Emergency Medicine, August 2015) support its use in the emergency room and intensive care unit (ICU) settings. The Macy Catheter can be an especially attractive option for emergency/acute care patients with difficult IV access who are in pain, agitated, dehydrated, febrile, nauseated or vomiting.
About the Macy Catheter™
The Macy Catheter is the only device with regulatory clearance solely for the ongoing rectal delivery of medications and fluids. The Macy Catheter is a quick, cost-effective alternative for medication and fluids administration when the oral route is compromised and IV access is difficult or not indicated. While it is particularly useful for patients with serious or terminal illness who often lose the ability to swallow and wish to remain at home, it has broad applications in the emergency room and other acute care settings as a bridge to IV access or to facilitate discharge to a lower acuity setting.
The Macy Catheter was invented by a 26-year veteran nurse, Brad Macy, RN, BSN, CHPN, co-founder of Hospi and recipient of the 2013 National Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse of the Year Award.
