The Metsä Fibre – Äänekoski Bioproduct Mill was also acknowledged with a surprise Honorary Mill of the Future Award. As the largest wood-processing plant in the Northern Hemisphere, the Äänekoski mill is a bioproduct mill, producing 1.3 million tonnes of softwood and birch pulp a year, all while using no fossil fuels. In addition to high-quality pulp, the mill produces a broad range of other bioproducts, such as tall oil, turpentine, bioenergy, product gas, sulphuric acid, biopellets and biogas. Bioproducts manufactured from side streams account for 20 % of the mill's sales, and this proportion continues to grow.

All entries were evaluated by a panel of judges who independently reviewed the entries according to each category's criteria.
