CPAs to Hash Over Cannabis Regs, Risks During Symposium

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Because 39 states have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational purposes, more opportunities are available for financial professionals to specialize in niche services to the expanding cannabis industry.

The second annual California Cannabis Industry Symposium on August 10 will explore how financial advisers can best serve cannabis growers, distributors and retailers. The symposium will be held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, 333 Universal Hollywood Drive, as well as via webcast. Register at http://CalCPA.org/CAcannabis.

Conducted by the CalCPA Education Foundation, the symposium will cover such topics as cannabis banking and compliance, product liability and black markets.

"As more of the industry is emerging from the underground economy, there is more demand for the services of financial professionals, including certified public accountants," said Greg Burke, CPA, symposium chair. "This symposium will give attendees necessary information to better advise and guide cannabis businesspeople. It's also a great opportunity to network with other professionals in this field."

He noted that this year's symposium will emphasize the regulatory environment for the cannabis industry and the practical aspects of calculating and reporting excise, sales and income taxes.

The symposium is designed for CPAs, attorneys, bankers and others who anticipate advising cannabis industry clients. It is available both live and via webcast at a cost of $325 for members of the California Society of CPAs and $425 for nonmembers. Continental breakfast and lunch are included in the registration for the live presentation.

The symposium provides up to eight hours of continuing professional education for CPAs and as much as six hours of MCLE credit for attorneys.
