OBP Medical Launches Expanded Portfolio of Single-Use Lighted Specula at ACOG 2017
New XS and XL sizes enable OB/GYNs to eliminate device-related cross-contamination risk for every patient

LAWRENCE, Mass. and SAN DIEGO, May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) 2017 Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting—OBP Medical, a leading global developer of single-use, self-contained, illuminating medical devices, today announced the launch of a new extra-small size and first-in-market extra-large size of its OfficeSPEC and ER-SPEC vaginal specula. Already available in small, medium, and large, the addition of extra-small and extra-large sizes makes OBP Medical's line of single-use lighted specula the most complete on the market. The OfficeSPEC and ER-SPEC will be on display in booth #1050 at the 2017 ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting, which takes place May 6-9 at the San Diego Convention Center.

"OfficeSPEC and ER-SPEC are widely adopted by OB/GYN practices across the globe that recognize the many clinical, operational and patient benefits of single-use lighted specula," said Jason Swift, CEO of OBP Medical.

The vaginal speculum is a tool routinely used by OB/GYNs for pelvic exams or procedures requiring visualization of the vaginal cavity. For many years, the medical community relied on reusable metal specula that are disinfected and reprocessed between patients. Even when staff follow FDA guidelines and manufacturer recommendations for reprocessing, contaminants can still exist on equipment because protocols are insufficient, devices aren't cleaned fast enough or products simply weren't designed with optimal cleaning in mind. As a result, reusable devices and light sources may present unnecessary cross-contamination dangers for patients. In addition, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that some bacteria, including certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), are resistant to clinical disinfectants.

OfficeSPEC and ER-SPEC are completely self-contained and entirely single-use vaginal specula. Each device comes out of the package ready for use and is thrown away after a single exam or procedure. Further, OfficeSPEC and ER-SPEC have an integrated, hands-free, single-use LED light source that is among the brightest in the industry, making rechargeable and plug-in light sources obsolete. These features do away with the time and expense associated with reprocessing and maintenance of reusable devices, as well as the need to find a light source and assemble parts prior to use, all while eliminating the risk of cross-contamination and healthcare-associated infection (HAI). With OBP Medical's disposable vaginal specula, health care organizations experience faster patient throughput, improved efficiency, and enhanced patient safety and satisfaction.

Continued Swift: "The expansion of our line to include extra-small and extra-large comes in response to direct customer feedback about the need for additional flexibility in sizing and ensures that our customers are able to use an OBP device for every patient need. We look forward to rolling out our expanded portfolio to users and showcasing our industry-leading specula this weekend at ACOG."
