DockerCon 2017 Survey Reveals that Organizations are Ready to Adopt Stateful Containers and Need Hybrid Cloud Solutions For Data Persistence

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A series of in-depth interviews with an Advisory Panel representing some of the 6000 attendees at the recent DockerCon 2017 event provided some significant insights into how containers are used in practice today and the new challenges enterprises face when looking for data management solutions for these environments.  The aggregated results show a dynamic market that is ripe for change, with attendees understanding that data persistence is now crucial and that a new class of data management and storage solutions are required to deliver it.

Elastifile is redefining the way data is stored and managed.

Participants of the "State of Stateful Containers" advisory panel answered questions about their container deployments, the applications and use cases that require stateful containers, their requirements for different types of file sharing functionality, and the various storage services that they require.

Results showed that:

  • Deployment was nearly equally distributed between on-premises (30 percent), public cloud (35 percent), and hybrid clouds (35 percent), reflecting the growing trend towards hybrid cloud IT and mobility across sites within the containers ecosystem.
  • Thirty-four percent of respondents deployed container applications requiring persistent storage, with databases, both RDMBS and NoSQL, as the most prevalent applications deployed as stateful containers.
  • Sixty-three percent of the respondents surveyed said that they share data across containers
  • In conjunction with the need to deliver data persistence, respondents cited reasons that they would consider changing their existing container storage solution, including: high availability (83 percent), performance (71 percent), scale (58 percent) and cost (58 percent).

"This advisory panel survey of real-world users reveals that, as more and more organizations turn towards containers to support their dynamic business process requirements, data persistence and cross-cloud mobility are required to keep up with our customers' innovation," said Andy Fenselau, VP of Marketing of Elastifile, the enterprise hybrid cloud data management company. "To support stateful containers effectively, they want a solution that delivers persistent, scalable, highly-available shared access to business-critical container data, whether on-premises, in the cloud, or spanning both.  While traditional storage products have failed to keep up, we have developed a unique cross-cloud data fabric that enables containerized workflows to leverage data efficiently across any environment, while also meeting the most demanding enterprise production SLAs for performance and availability.  We see significant enterprise adoption for powerful container use cases like modernizing legacy applications, hybrid cloud DevOps, and enabling elastic SaaS platforms."

By delivering a scalable, high-performance persistence layer, Elastifile also enables containerization to address new use cases that were previously out of reach. Many traditional applications (e.g. relational databases), rely on persistence for their core functionality. With Elastifile, those applications can now be reliably and rapidly migrated to containerized infrastructure, both on-premises and in the cloud, thus enabling much simpler, more agile deployment and management.
