New form of sedation now available in Fargo from Vance Thompson Vision

FARGO, N.D., Jan. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Speaking at the 2017 Hawaiian Eye meeting, Michael Greenwood, MD, discussed on Friday, Jan. 20, a new, more comfortable sedation process used for cataract surgery.

Dr. Greenwood, a surgeon with Vance Thompson Vision in Fargo, ND, said his patients have had more success with using sublingual sedation for cataract surgery than the traditional IV sedation.

Sublingual sedation involves giving patients a tablet that has a release time of a couple minutes, and as the tablet dissolves, the patient fades into a conscious sedation. The sublingual method of anesthesia has shown to give patients a more comfortable and peaceful sedation process and waking process.

"What I get with sublingual sedation is a consistently relaxed patient throughout the entire case," Greenwood said. "We believe so strongly in this form of sedation that I used it in my own intraocular procedure."

Vance Thompson, MD, John Berdahl, MD, Michael Greenwood, MD and other members of Vance Thompson Vision took part in the development of this compounded sedative. Greenwood said he now uses the compounded medication with all of his cataract patients, and he only rarely needs to use an IV.

Greenwood also said other benefits of sublingual sedation include a predictable dosage and patient response and a steady stare in patients that is helpful during surgery, as the light does not tend to bother them.

Greenwood said the top benefit of sublingual sedation is happy patients. His patients experience a more relaxed sedation process, and they do not need to deal with the discomfort of using an IV. For more information about Dr. Greenwood or the cataract procedure, visit www.vancethompsonvision.com.
