ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire, Dec. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ouagadougou Partnership (OP) will hold its 5th Annual Meeting in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, from December 12th – 14th, 2016. The Partnership is a joint effort of nine Francophone West African countries and various technical and financial partners to accelerate progress in the use of Family Planning (FP) services in the region.

Since the Ouagadougou Partnership's inception, significant progress has been made in increasing access to contraception across the region. Between 2012 and 2015, the number of women using contraceptive methods in Partnership countries increased from 3,000,000 to 4,350,000 – an increase of more than one million additional women. In 2016, the Ouagadougou Partnership entered its acceleration phase, with the new aim to reach an additional 2,000,000 users by 2020.
The Partnership stakeholders meet annually to discuss their common interests and share the results and constraints in the implementation of action plans. To date, the Partnership has held four annual meetings. Each of these meetings have marked a decisive turning point for the promotion of Family Planning in Francophone West Africa.
The theme for this year's annual meeting in Abidjan is: "Promoting contraception means guaranteeing a better future for young people." The main objective of the meeting is to focus on youth, in order to improve their inclusion in FP programs, strategies, and action plans. The participants will also take stock of the achievements of the different stakeholders for the first year of the acceleration phase, discuss the challenges and constraints faced by the Partnership members, and consider solutions to improve the implementation of the FP action plans.
Approximately 350 people will attend the meeting, including donor representatives, technical partners, civil society organizations, members of Parliament from Ouagadougou Partnership and donor countries, journalists, and representatives from the private sector. Each OP country will be represented by a delegation of 10 people.
About the Ouagadougou Partnership
The Ouagadougou Partnership was launched at the Regional Conference on Population, Development and Family Planning held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in February 2011 by the nine governments of the Francophone countries of West Africa, together with financial and technical partners, with the aim to accelerate progress of the use of family planning services in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
The Ouagadougou Partnership is based on two principles. It focuses on better donor coordination to maximize country support and also national and regional collaboration and cooperation to address the high unmet need for family planning.
The Ouagadougou Partnership Coordination Unit (UCPO), based in Dakar, Senegal, facilitates communication between countries and current and potential donors, helps monitor progress against OP objectives, and shares information between stakeholders of the Partnership and other audiences.
