TOPIC: How Improvements in Communication Capability Can Answer Critical Operator Challenges During Location and Recovery Missions

WHEN: Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. EDT

WHERE: Room 204, Dayton Convention Center, 22 E 5th St, Dayton, OH 45402

SESSION ABSTRACT: The Cospas-Sarsat System provides an accurate, timely and reliable system for alerting and distributing data, to enable recovery of persons in distress. Use of this system has contributed to saving over 39,000 lives. The successful and prompt rescue of survivors depends on the quality of the Cospas-Sarsat alert data. It's also totally reliant on the capabilities of the rescue resources.

Recovery missions are often complex and carried out in extreme environmental conditions. Situational awareness and dynamic communication between mission team members are often critical to enable recovery without delay. Improving communication capability can reduce the risk for both the survivor and the rescue team. During the final phase of rescue missions and recovery of casualties, it is vital that clear communication and tracking of team members is available on-demand.

Communication clarity, availability and usability, along with team member condition and location monitoring, is of paramount importance. The field environments for land and sea, and for SAR operators, coast guards, emergency medical services, firefighters and police carry similar needs for local mission communication.
