FLSA Overtime Rule Changes To Be Featured at the 2016 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 2, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Labor's (DOL) recent changes to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime regulations, which go into effect December 1, 2016, (annual.shrm.org/flsa-rule-change/) is one reason HR professionals should attend the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) 2016 Annual Conference & Exposition (annual.shrm.org), according to Jeaneen Andrews-Feldman, chief marketing officer for SHRM.

The four-day event is being held June 19-22 in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Convention Center, and offers 200 concurrent sessions as well as 600 HR solution providers at its exposition.  Nearly 15,000 HR professionals are expected to attend.

"The business implications resulting from the DOL's key changes to overtime rules are vast," said J. Robert Carr, J.D., SHRM-SCP, SHRM's senior vice president of membership and external affairs. "SHRM is here to help HR professionals sort through the noise and take the practical steps necessary to implement the new regulations."

Carr added that the DOL's final rule disproportionately impacts the nonprofit sector.

"A wide array of nonprofit, government and service sector employers are subject to this rule and will need to immediately understand how it applies to their organization, employees, and services provided," Carr said.

FLSA offerings available at the 2016 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition include:

  • A Solutions Station, where attendees can ask FLSA-related questions of a certified HR Knowledge Advisor or employment law attorney (note: this is not a substitute for legal counsel);
  • Five, in-depth sessions on the overtime regulations throughout the conference, to include;
    • A session led by former head of DOL's Wage & Hour Division, Tammy McCutcheon.
    • A session led by SHRM's Vice President for Government Affairs Mike Aitken addressing the upcoming election and its anticipated impact on HR; and
    • A session Tuesday, June 21 at 10 a.m. specifically focused on nonprofits.

"Attending an event like the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition allows HR professionals to think more broadly about how to implement the new FLSA regulations," Andrews-Feldman said.  "Attendees will have access to industry experts as well as the opportunity to gain greater insight from their peers on how others are applying these changes within their organization."

"In addition to FLSA, the SHRM Annual Conference offers a comprehensive agenda of topics that are relevant to all HR professionals regardless of level, role or industry," said Andrews-Feldman.
