Pittsburgh Glass Works Showcasing Technologies to Help Meet Fuel Economy Standards at 2016 SAE World Congress

PITTSBURGH, April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Pittsburgh Glass Works, LLC (PGW) will highlight advances in lightweight glazing and solar control for automotive glass to help automakers meet global emissions and fuel economy standards at the 2016 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress being held at Cobo Center in Detroit from April 12-14.

PGW – which offers a wide range of high performance glass solutions that address safety, fuel economy, emissions, comfort and convenience to all segments of the automotive market – will showcase its latest innovations at booth #342 at the show, including the lightweight glass solutions featured on the Ford GT Supercar and the Tesla Model X. Mukesh Rustagi, director of strategic product development for PGW, will also present "Glazing Technology Contribution to Meeting Regulatory Targets" during the Glass Applications technical session.

"With emissions and fuel economy standards getting tougher, PGW is continually working to deliver products that offer weight reduction and solar management improvement, which also enhance performance and comfort," said Rustagi. "PGW can provide thinner glass technologies that perform as well, and often times better, in terms of acoustic performance, thermal load reduction, structural strength and aesthetics compared to standard glass."

By using new thinner glaze glass compositions such as those offered by PGW in a vehicle's windshield, sunroof, side windows and rear window, automakers can see a weight reduction of up to 20kg over standard glass while maintaining performance.

In addition, PGW utilizes Infra Red (IR) reflective technologies in its solar glazing to help reduce the thermal load through the glass, which reduces the use of air conditioning. The latest technology from PGW will enable automakers to claim the maximum allowable off-cycle emissions credits for glazing from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"Solar glazing and lightweight glazing have a direct impact on improving fuel economy and emissions," said Rustagi. "The technologies result in lower emissions, helping automakers meet stringent targets. It is especially helpful for hybrid and electric vehicles that utilize a larger percentage of energy for air conditioning and heating, where solar glazing and lightweight glazing can help improve driving range."
