HMP Announces European Launch of Amputation Prevention Symposium (AMP)
AMP Europe will provide EMEA clinicians with important education on critical limb ischemia and further enhance the company's focus on expanding its healthcare event portfolio globally

MALVERN, Pa., Dec. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- HMP, a leading healthcare event and education company, today announced the European launch of the Amputation Prevention (AMP) Symposium, scheduled to take place October 2–4, 2019 in Lugano, Switzerland.

AMP Europe will be an expansion of the Amputation Prevention Symposium, the flagship meeting now in its ninth year held annually in August in Chicago. Led by Jihad A. Mustapha, MD, FACC, FSCAI, a pioneer in the field of critical limb ischemia (CLI), AMP is the only meeting of its kind dedicated to the treatment and prevention of CLI.

"CLI is a global public health concern," said Mustapha, of Advanced Cardiac & Vascular Amputation Prevention Centers, Grand Rapids, Michigan. "AMP Europe will meet an unmet need, providing awareness and education regarding CLI prevalence, diagnosis, treatment (surgical, endovascular, and medical management), and post-revascularization surveillance."

Each year, more than 75,000 amputations occur as a result of CLI, a serious form of peripheral vascular disease caused by severe blockage in the arteries of the lower extremities. Amputations due to complications of the vascular system continue to increase, particularly given comorbidities such as diabetes and obesity and an aging population. CLI remains a global problem due to many factors, including a lack of awareness within the healthcare community and the general public.

AMP Europe will provide a forum to connect clinicians — interventional cardiologists and radiologists, vascular surgeons, angiologists, and the entire limb salvage team — with the foremost experts in CLI to gain knowledge and learn from one another. The practical program will afford attendees the opportunity to gain insight and perspective on CLI advances from around the world.

Joining Dr. Mustapha as Course Director will be Jos C. van den Berg, MD, of Ospedale Regionale di Lugano, Lugano, Switzerland, who will help guide the inaugural European program.

"After the enormous success of AMP in Chicago over the past 8 years, it has become clear that the education offered at AMP does not exist elsewhere around the globe," said Dr. van den Berg. "In order to support the global fight against CLI, it is a logical next step to expand the meeting outside the US, first by bringing it to Europe. The goal of the meeting is the same as Chicago: 'to save limbs and save lives.' The symposium will be tailored to the specific needs of the healthcare systems throughout Europe, and a renowned European and US faculty will make the global expansion of AMP and its philosophy possible."

HMP selected Health Service & Education (HSEC Swiss GmbH) as a international partner to support the meeting's organization.

"We are very much looking forward to the first AMP Europe and working with our partner HSEC to create a very successful meeting," said Jeff Hennessy, Chairman and CEO, HMP. "This expansion further supports our strategy of building a global portfolio of best-in-class healthcare events. AMP Europe strengthens not only our established cardiovascular franchise, but also our global franchise overall, which includes the ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer. Most importantly, the meeting is another example of delivering on our mission to provide practical education that can improve patient care and save lives."
