Cal INDEX and Orion Health 'Future Proofing' First Ever Payer-Led Health Information Exchange
HIMSS16 presentation to show how new model of cooperation enables competitors to overcome IT integration and data acquisition challenges

SAN FRANCISCO and BOSTON, Feb. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Providers and payers have historically rejected the open exchange of data for their member and patient populations for competitive reasons. This is changing as innovative organizations forge unique partnerships that leverage the combined power of data from different sources to improve patient care. Recognizing this, HIMSS has selected executives from The California Integrated Data Exchange (Cal INDEX) and Orion Health (HIMSS16 Booth #1626) to co-present an educational session highlighting Cal INDEX's innovative health information exchange (HIE) model at the 2016 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas.

California Integrated Data Exchange (Cal INDEX) operates a statewide, next-generation health information exchange (HIE). The goal of Cal INDEX is to improve quality of care by providing clinicians real-time access to a unified source of integrated patient information that includes clinical data from healthcare providers and health insurers. Cal INDEX was founded through seed funding from Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross. For more information, visit www.calindex.org . (PRNewsFoto/Cal INDEX)

Dave Watson, CEO of Cal INDEX, and David Bennett, EVP Product and Strategy, Orion Health, will lead a session titled, "Cal INDEX – A New Model for Collaboration" on Tuesday, March 1 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. PST in the Sands Expo and Convention Center (Lando 4205). The HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, which is the health IT industry's largest gathering of health information management professionals, will draw more than 40,000 health IT professionals, clinicians, executives, and vendors from all over the world.

At the HIMSS session, Watson will discuss the next steps in Cal INDEX's journey to create a sustainable HIE and become one of the first entities to combine clinical and claims data for use at the point of care. Cal INDEX, along with its vendor Orion Health, are developing and implementing the new platform that will enable sophisticated analytics and reporting functionality on a statewide scale. Pre-loaded with payer and provider data, the platform will give ACOs the clinical quality measures they require to meet payment and quality objectives. Participating providers and payers will also have the ability to perform "bulk downloads" of their patients' data and upload the details into a data warehouse or analytics platform for population health management.

"Our new model of cooperation is enabling competitors to overcome the IT integration costs and data acquisition challenges associated with population health management," explained Watson. "With the recent addition of Dignity Health's patient information, Cal INDEX will significantly enhance the data available to healthcare professionals so care can be more effectively coordinated and medication adherence improved."

"As a global pioneer in delivering population health and precision medicine solutions, Orion Health is uniquely positioned to provide the enabling technologies needed by Cal INDEX, the largest statewide HIE in the U.S.," said Bennett. "The Orion Health Amadeus Platform is inherently scalable to handle the vast amounts of data we will see in the near future, with clinical, claims, genomic and patient-entered data from a variety of sources. As such, we have developed a premier distributed architecture to 'future proof' this solution for Cal INDEX."
